In 1996, the school kapa haka group went to the Secondary Schools biennial competitions held in Tauranga. The school was placed second overall. The winners for 1996 were Te Kura-a-rohe o Ruatoki, from the Mataatua region. Third place went to Rotorua Boys & Girls High School, from the Te Arawa region. The group leaders of the school kapa haka group in 1996 were Tipene Noda (male) and Miria Thompson (female). The results for this competition are as follows:
